Hangeul for Beginners | Lesson 4: How to Order Food Like a Local in Korea!

How to Order Food Like a Local in Korea

Hello, my friends! 👋 Congratulations on mastering Hangeul reading! You know the alphabet, the 'Batchim', and the magic 'Rolling Sound'. Now, you are ready to use your skills in the real world!

Today, we will learn how to order food like a pro at a Korean restaurant. It’s easier than you think!

1. The Magic Spell: '주세요' (Ju-se-yo)

In Korea, there is one magic phrase that can get you almost anything. It is '주세요' (Please give me). Just put the name of the item in front of it, and you are ready to go!

  • 물 (Water) + 주세요 = 물 주세요 (Mul-ju-se-yo) -> Please give me water.

  • 숟가락 (Spoon) + 주세요 = 숟가락 주세요 (Sut-ga-rak-ju-se-yo) -> Please give me a spoon.

  • 메뉴 (Menu) + 주세요 = 메뉴 주세요 (Me-nyu-ju-se-yo) -> Please give me the menu.

2. Let's Practice: Ordering Your Favorite Foods!

Let’s look at some popular Korean dishes. Remember the 'Rolling Sound' we learned in Lesson 3? Try saying these out loud!

(Bul-go-gi-ju-se-yo!)

Speak Hangeul, Enjoy Korean Food!

3. Super Useful "Bonus" Words!

Sometimes you need more than just food. Here are the words that will save your life at a Korean restaurant:

  • 이거 (This) + 주세요: "이거 주세요!" (I-geo-ju-se-yo!) -> "Please give me this!" (You can point at a picture on the menu!)

  • 계산 (Check) + 해주세요: "계산 해주세요!" (Gye-san-hae-ju-se-yo!) -> "Please, check, please!"

  • 맛있어요! (It’s delicious!): Say this when you finish your meal. The chef will be so happy!

4. Let's Challenge Yourself! (Comment Mission)

Now, I want to be your private Korean tutor! 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 I want you to try writing a full sentence in the comments below.

[Your Mission!]

  1. Pick one of your favorite Korean foods (from the list above or any other!).

  2. Combine it with the magic word '주세요'.

  3. Write it in the comment section. "I will personally read your comment and help you fix it if there are any mistakes!"

Don't be shy! Whether it's "비빔밥 주세요!" or "물 주세요!", just write it down. Let’s practice together!
