Hangeul for Beginners | Lesson 3: The Magic of Rolling Sounds! (연음 법칙)

The Fun Way to Learn Hangeul: Making Sounds Roll and Connect

Hello, my friends! 👋

In Lesson 2, we learned about the 'Batchim' (the bottom block). You guys are already Hangeul masters!

But, have you ever noticed something strange? Sometimes, when we speak Korean, the sounds change! It sounds like the words are "sliding" or "rolling" into each other. Today, we are going to learn this cool magic trick called 'The Rolling Sound' (연음 법칙).

1. Why do letters 'roll'? (The 'ㅇ' Secret)

Why Do Korean Letters Move? The Secret of the Empty 'ㅇ' Seat!

Think of the 'ㅇ' as a "Friendly Ghost." It’s a silent sound, so it’s like an empty seat.

When a Batchim (a bottom consonant) sees an empty seat ('ㅇ') next to it, it just slides over to fill that seat!

It’s just like moving to a more comfortable chair!

2. Let’s Practice: More Delicious Examples!

Let’s look at some words you already know and see them "roll"!

Cheat Sheet: Real Korean Pronunciation with Rolling Sounds

  • 먹어요 (Eat): * Written: 먹 + 어 + 요

    • Say it: 머 + 거 + 요 (Meo-geo-yo)

    • The 'ㄱ' rolled over to the '어'!

  • 집이에요 (It's a house):

    • Written: 집 + 이 + 에 + 요

    • Say it: 지 + 비 + 에 + 요 (Ji-bi-e-yo)

    • The 'ㅂ' rolled over to the '이'!

  • 옷이에요 (It's clothes):

    • Written: 옷 + 이 + 에 + 요

    • Say it: 오 + 시 + 에 + 요 (O-si-e-yo)

    • The 'ㅅ' rolled over to the '이'!

  • 꽃이에요 (It's a flower):

    • Written: 꽃 + 이 + 에 + 요

    • Say it: 꼬 + 치 + 에 + 요 (Kko-chi-e-yo)

    • The 'ㅊ' rolled over to the '이'!

3. Why do we do this?

"Why don't we just say it the way it's written?" you might ask. Because it’s too hard to stop and start your voice! Try saying "집-이" (Jib-i) fast. It’s hard, right? But if you say "지비" (Ji-bi), it sounds like a smooth, happy song! Korean is all about being smooth and fast.

4. Let's Challenge Yourself!

Here are three words. Try to "roll" them yourself!

  1. 꽃 (Flower) + 이 (Subject marker) = ? (Hint: 꼬 + 치)

  2. 부엌 (Kitchen) + 이 (Subject marker) = ? (Hint: 부 + 어 + 키)

  3. 책 (Book) + 이 (Subject marker) = ? (Hint: 채 + 기)
